Course Overview

Whatever you want to achieve in your career, the BCS Professional Qualification can help fulfil your ambition. The British Computer Society (BCS) Professional Qualification is an internationally recognised qualification, essential for a career in computing and IT. It is examined to the level of an honours degree, which acknowledges your practical experience as well as your academic abilities. It will give you a distinctive edge over the competition, as employers can be confident that you know not only what you are doing, but how and why.

Course Structure

The qualification has a modular structure set in 3 parts. Students need to complete the Course on which they are registered in order to progress to the next level.

Certificate in IT Level 4 (1 year)


This is the foundation level of BCS Higher Education Qualifications. This qualification is equivalent to Year 1 of a UK University Honours Degree and is recognised by the QCA as a Level 4 Course. The Certificate focuses on the following core modules:

  • Information Systems
  • Software Development
  • Technology

The course culminates in a two hour written examination focusing on all three core modules and successful completion means you are eligible to apply for BCS Associate Membership- AMBCS.


Diploma in IT Level 5 (1 Year)

The Diploma is examined to the academic level of a Higher National Diploma. It consists of a two-hour written paper on the compulsory core module:

  • Professional Issues in Information Systems Practice

PLUS a two-hour written paper on each of three modules chosen from the following list.

  • IT Service Management
  • Computer Networks
  • Database Systems
  • Object Oriented Programming
  • Project Management
  • Principles of Internet Technologies
  • Principles of User Interface Design
  • Software Engineering
  • New Fundamentals of Software Engineering module

In order to complete the Diploma in IT, candidates must complete a Professional Project. Successful completion of the project and examination enables candidates to apply for selected degree courses with Universities and gives eligibility to apply for BCS Membership (MBCS) if the candidate has three years experience as an IT professional.

PROFESSIONAL GRADUATE DIPLOMA L6 (1 Year)


The Professional Graduate Diploma is examined to the academic level of a UK university honours degree and is recognised by the QCA as a Level 6 course. It consists of a three-hour written paper on each of four modules chosen from the list below. Alternatively, you can take the Professional Graduate Diploma by submission of a dissertation.

  • Realising the User Interface
  • World Wide Web – beyond the Basics
  • Professional Project (Professional Graduate Diploma level)

Entry Requirement:

Certificate-- Four GCSE/GCE passes at grade C or above or equivalent overseas qualifications

Diploma-- A Levels and above or equivalent overseas qualifications

Professional Graduate Diploma-- A Levels and above or equivalent overseas qualifications

A Levels or their equivalent.

Overseas Students

Pearson:

Certificate and Diploma: 36 in each band

Professional Graduate Diploma: 51 in each band

IELTS Requirement:

Certificate and Diploma: 5.0 Overall Band Average (minimum of 4.0 in each band)

Professional Graduate Diploma: 5.5 in each band

Students shall merit special consideration in individual exceptional circumstances.
